Jamu gendong is one of Indonesia’s cultural heritages that is nearly extinct. In the 1980s and 1990s, jamu gendong was very popular and became an important part of everyday life. Jamu gendong is a traditional herbal drink sold by female vendors who carry it in baskets slung over their backs. These vendors typically travel from house to house, offering their products packed in baskets carried on their heads, creating a distinctive atmosphere as they walk through bustling streets.
However, over time, the presence of jamu gendong has faded. Many factors contribute to its declining popularity. The shift toward a more modern lifestyle and the availability of more practical, instant beverages are among the reasons. Additionally, the lack of new generations taking up the trade is threatening this tradition with extinction.
Overall, jamu gendong is a symbol of Indonesia’s rich culture and traditions that should be preserved and sustained. In every drop of jamu lies the knowledge and wisdom of the ancestors, which deserves to live on and be recognized by current and future generations.
